First Chinese Baptist is in the heart of San Francisco Chinatown, where it seems that the whole world is coming to visit, meet, work, live, and be faithful followers of Jesus Christ. Blessed and equipped with effectiveness in English- and Cantonese-speaking ministries, First Chinese Baptist is filled with ministry activities from morning to evening.
Being bilingual in English and Cantonese and a bicultural and multigenerational church, we focus our ministries in both languages and cultural heritages and believe that when we function faithfully in the midst of such diversity, we are living out the Kingdom of God.
On Sunday mornings, we offer three distinct worship experiences to meet the worship interests of people. At 10:00, this English Worship uses guitars and drums to praise God in songs. Many of those who attend this worship are youth, college and young adults, and parents of young children, all of whom live out their faith in today’s world. They meet in the gym at the Chinatown YMCA just across the street from the church.
The 10:00 Cantonese Worship proclaims the Good News of the Living Christ to a multigenerational congregation. Blended in worship music, the people at this service are actively serving in community outreach ministries including Friday night classes and worship.
The 11:20 English Worship proclaims the Gospel in an experience that uses voice choirs, the organ, and piano. Populated by baby-boomers, young adults, and older adults, this worship is filled with people committed and involved in the many ministries of the church, including active missions.
Sunday school classes are available for all ages either before or after one of the three worship services. The children classes meet in our church building while the youth and adult classes are mainly in the YMCA.
With a total membership of over 500 people, members and friends of the church develop deep and long-lasting relationships in their participation in one of the 20 fellowship groups. Ranging from youth all the way to seniors, there’s a group for everyone to belong to! In regularly scheduled meetings, the groups grow in their Christian faith by exploring relevant topics, engaging in Bible studies, serving in mission projects, and having fellowship as sisters and brothers in Christ.
FCBC is committed to missions both locally and globally. The Friday Night School, summer Day Camp, and community outreach ministries are some of the ongoing mission outreach we do in the Chinatown community. Through the American Baptist mission program, FCBC supports missions overseas and in the U.S. in our annual giving. One example of this is the partnership FCBC has with ABC missions in northern Thailand to improve the livelihood of hill tribe villages. We are committed to sending out a mission work team annually. Other endeavors include the Lanna Coffee Project and supporting a missionary couple in Macau.
Founded in 1880 as the Chinese Baptist Mission, FCBC is continuing to be transformed by the Spirit to be the hands and feet of Christ in San Francisco and around the world. In 1999, we completed a $1.3 million retrofit and renovation to provide a safe house of worship in case of another earthquake. In 2010, 81 solar panels were installed on top of our church roof to provide electricity for our ministries and to contribute to the energy grid.
We invite you to be a part of FCBC as we listen to God’s plan for our witness to proclaim Good News in Christ Jesus. Come and discover FCBC!
